The Calbreath and the Smith families were pioneers who came to Oregon in the 19th century. The Calbreath family papers comprise the papers of John Franklin Calbreath, a physician, farmer, and politician, his wife Irene Smith Calbreath, their daughters Evelene and Helen, Irene's father Sidney Smith, and Irene's mother, brother and sisters. The collection contains incoming and outgoing correspondence, diaries, account books, day books, and manuscripts of poetry and prose by Irene Smith Calbreath.

John Franklin Calbreath (1854-1939) was a physician, farmer, Oregon State Senator, and superintendent of the Oregon State Insane Asylum. He was born in Weston, West Virginia, the son of a planter whose lands were ruined during the Civil War. In 1864 the family moved to Iowa, and the following year they traveled overland to Oregon, settling at first in Benton County. John Franklin Calbreath (1854-1939) was born in West Virginia and came to Oregon with his family in 1865. He attended Toland Medical College in San Francisco and practiced medicine in Lafayette and McMinnville, Or. He served in the Oregon State Senate and from 1899 to 1908 he was superintendent of the Oregon State Insane Asylum. He married Irene Smith, daughter of Sidney Smith, an Oregon pioneer.
